Why Fragrance Free?

 

Laundry could be daunting or laundry could be therapeutic.. it’s just the way you see it really. That quintessential laundry smell that one can never miss it - every laundry room smells of it, and is ingrained in our minds. So of course laundry needs to have fragrance, right? Or does it really? 

Fragrances leave everything smelling fresh and therapeutic, most laundry detergents available in the market today have a hearty dose of these fragrances to give them a lasting & delightfully pleasant odour.

However, while most of us look forward to that “refreshing fragrance” in our laundry, it could be a cause of concern for certain individuals and newborn’s.

Here’s why…

Newborns tend to have extremely sensitive skin, partly because they are still getting used to being in the air environment as opposed to the water environment in the womb. They sometimes suffer from skin irritation, rashes, tiny red bumps on their face, backs etc. And to think that the poor babies can't even tell us that they are itchy or even use their hands to scratch their itch. If you see your little one rubbing their red cheeks on the pillow, chances are they have allergies. Now how do you treat this?

The only thing you can control is to reduce all triggers that could make it worse. Fragrances in personal care products and laundry detergents could be one such trigger. In laundry detergents, strong fragrance chemicals roughen the fabric and linger on after washing, and may in some cases cause discomfort, rashes, redness, dryness and itchiness upon coming in contact with the baby’s delicate skin. Babies with eczema-prone skin or skin that’s easily irritated are especially vulnerable.

Fragrances are concoctions of numerous ingredients. More than 3,000 chemical combinations are available for formulating fragrances worldwide, ranging from synthetic to natural (including essential oils) and most of these chemicals aren’t tested for safety, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG). The EWG lists these concoctions as potentially toxic and harmful to health. Numerous studies & reports worldwide also suggest that when added to cleaners or detergents, these chemically laced fragrances may exacerbate symptoms if you have allergy-prone or sensitive skin.
